What is a Gravel Calculator?

A gravel calculator estimates the volume and weight of gravel needed for a project—driveways, paths, landscaping, or drainage. Enter the area dimensions and depth to get cubic metres (or yards) and approximate tonnes required.

The Formula

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Weight ≈ Volume × 1.6 tonnes/m³ (gravel density varies; 1.5–1.7 is typical)

Typical Depths

UseDepth
Path5-7.5 cm
Driveway7.5-10 cm
Driveway (heavy use)10-15 cm

Example

  • Area: 5m × 3m, depth 5cm
  • Volume: 5 × 3 × 0.05 = 0.75 m³
  • Weight: ~1.2 tonnes

Frequently Asked Questions

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

For a 10m × 4m driveway at 10cm depth: 10 × 4 × 0.10 = 4 m³, ~6.4 tonnes.

Should I buy extra?

Yes. Buy 10% extra for compaction, uneven ground, and wastage.

What’s the density of gravel?

Typically 1.5–1.7 tonnes per m³ depending on type and compaction. We use 1.6 as an average.
